Future market artificial intelligence

Fraunhofer industry workshop discusses the potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare

Intelligent artificial systems are self-learning and capable of responding to enquiries adaptively and contextually, of interacting naturally with people and of dealing with new situations. Machine learning is a key discipline of artificial intelligence. Significant progress has been made, especially with deep-learning systems for artificial neural networks. The range of potential applications for part- or fully-automated systems and collaborative assistants is extensive. Especially in the USA, companies are investing several million USD into the research and development of artificial intelligence, cognitive computing and automated learning processes to ensure their innovation pipeline doesn't run dry, and are acquiring companies in this field.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer IMW Professionalizing Transfer Processes Unit and the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS are investigating the current application potential for intelligent artificial systems in Germany and world-wide in a joint research project. In the course of transdisciplinary workshops with science and business experts, they are assessing the application potential for artificial intelligence in specific fields, namely call centers, healthcare as well as manufacturing and engineering.

Within the scope of the project, the team of researchers sent out invitations to the future workshop “Artificial intelligence for medical biosignal processing” in Berlin on 17 March 2017. Experts from the Fraunhofer Big Data Alliance exchanged information about their past experiences in intelligent biosignal analysis and image processing with users, and discussed the future developments and trends, requirements and challenges of the practical applications.

The industry workshop was organized by the Professionalizing Transfer Processes Unit with the support of the Fraunhofer IMW Price and Service Management Unit and in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Big Data Alliance and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

The results of the cross-institute research project are scheduled to be published in May 2017 under the title “Future market artificial intelligence – potentials and applications”.

Duration of the project: 10.2016 - 05.2017
