The interdisciplinary project "C³ - Carbon Concrete Composite" received a German Sustainability Award in the "research" category at the end of November 2015. The Fraunhofer team that participated in this project was led by Dr. Marija Radić and Dr. Nizar Abdelkafi. Since June of 2014 the scientists, along with more than 130 partners from science, industry and trade associations, have investigated application possibilities for the new composite carbon concrete on a nationwide basis. Among other activities, they carried out a study that has made visible markets and market segments for the carbon concrete. The winning project for the German Sustainability Award was chosen from a field of 87 nominated applications by an online audience. The initiative was spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and in 2015 was included under the title "Science Year 2015 - Future City".
