START-MIT-NORM: Start-ups secure their success with norms and standards

Project duration: 11/2015 – 08/2016

Commissioned by: DIN German Institute for Standardization e. V.

Standardization – whether by itself or combined with other options, such as patenting – can be a key factor in the success of innovative start-ups. Nevertheless, only a few young companies have so far exploited the full potential of standardization and its combination with patents. START-MIT-NORM begins at this point. Based on ten case studies, the project investigates how successful start-ups establish innovative products and services on the market through standardization and patenting, and how they lay the groundwork for developing future technologies. The project is part of DIN's “Innovations with Norms and Standards” (INS) program, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) on the basis of a resolution passed by the German Bundestag.

The German Institute for Standardization e.V. (DIN) is the initiator of START-MIT-NORM and commissioned the project within the framework of the INS basic investigation.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS in Berlin, together with Fraunhofer IMW in Leipzig, is responsible for the START-MIT-NORM project. In cooperation with Fraunhofer FOKUS: Professor Dr. Knut Blind and Esmeralda Florez.

The Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economvy IMW in Leipzig heads the START-MIT-NORM project and is the main contact organization.
