The Fraunhofer MOEZ, as the Fraunhofer IMW was then known, undertook a study for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the area of service innovation, under the topic of Integration, Connecting and Innovative Forms of Cooperation (IViKo). The co-operation partner was the Institute for Applied Computer Science e.V. at the University of Leipzig (InfAI).

The main aim of this study was to develop recommendations for a sustainable strengthening of the German service industry. Based on the results of this study, further research activities have been generated to increase its competitiveness in the future. In addition, the broad effect of German service research was strengthened.
