As classic financial service providers and investors in Germany, in particular, banks and Sparkassen have opened themselves up in recent years to the participative financing instrument that is crowdfunding. For credit institutions, crowdfunding, still a young form of financing, represents a promising extension to traditional forms of credit financing; however, the knowledge of the added value and the diverse potential applications is often only limitedly available at many German banks and Sparkassen.
For the promotion of science for the Sparkassen Financial Group, Fraunhofer IMW in Leipzig is conducting the research project “Crowdfunding and Credit Financing: A viable future co-financing model?” The aim of the analysis will involve an inventory of the types of crowdfunding already established on the market and the identification of successful co-financing models from crowdfunding and bank financing. The driving forces for and barriers to the transferability and use of crowdfunding combined with the existing products in the credit business of the Sparkassen Financial Group will be derived.
Along with the inventory analysis of successful co-financing models from crowdfunding and bank financing (regional/national/international), Fraunhofer IMW, in cooperation with Prof. Carolin Bock from the Technical University of Darmstadt, will carry out a comprehensive survey regarding the state of knowledge and with regard to people’s experiences with crowdfunding within the Sparkassen Financial Group. The findings are to be prepared scientifically in a short study, as well as presented within the scope of a specialist event and discussed with a select group of experts. The research project should thus contribute to the transfer and anchoring of the knowledge and potential of crowdfunding as a participative co-financing instrument.
