QUANTUM ECOSYSTEM DEUTSCHLAND (Q.E.D.)

The project intends to provide scientific support for the establishment of sovereign innovation and value chains in the quantum computing ecosystem in Germany.

Module 1 – Analysis of the ecosystem

The module seeks to develop new methods and tools for ecosystem analysis, to provide overview of technologies, organizations and their knowledge base as well as strategic funding potentials.

Module 2 –Innovation-economic monitoring

The module aims to pilot new methods and tools for ecosystem development, to develop science-based strategies for the establishment and expansion of the sovereign quantum computing ecosystem in Germany.

Q.E.D. Quantum Ecosystem Deutschland

The project "Quantum Ecosystem Deutschland (Q.E.D.)" aims to provide scientific support for the establishment of sovereign innovation and value chains in the quantum computing ecosystem in Germany. The project, which is divided into two modules, is intended to help develop operational knowledge and strategies for the medium to long-term establishment of a technologically sovereign and internationally competitive quantum computing ecosystem.

 

Background

The aim of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF funding measure "Quantum Computer Demonstration Setups" is, in addition to scientific and technical results, to contribute to the establishment of sovereign innovation and value chains in the quantum computing ecosystem in Germany. Thereby, a technologically sovereign and internationally competitive quantum computing ecosystem is to be developed in the medium to long term. In this context, a number of innovation and socio-economic challenges must be overcome.

Project description

The project "Quantum Ecosystem Deutschland (Q.E.D.)" analyzes these challenges and develops approaches for overcoming them. The project team supports research institutions, companies and politics in the development of strategies for the establishment of sovereign innovation and value creation networks.

Project plan

Module 1 – Ecosystem analysis

Module 1 intends to develop new methods and tools for ecosystem analysis in order to provide an overview of technologies, organizations and their knowledge base as well as strategic funding potentials.
The following tasks are paramount:

  • Mapping of actors, interactions and political-structural framework conditions in the German quantum computing ecosystem
  • Identification of strategic synergy potentials
  • Global positioning of the German quantum computing ecosystem in international comparison

Module 2 – Innovation-economic monitoring

Module 2 will pilot new methods and tools for ecosystem development in order to develop scientifically sound strategies for the establishment and expansion of the sovereign quantum computing ecosystem in Germany.

The focus is on the following task areas in close collaboration with the quantum computing community:

  • Structured strategy development process for the establishment and expansion of a sovereign quantum computing ecosystem in Germany
  • Systematic monitoring of transfer planning and quantum computing ecosystem development related to the funded platform technologies
  • Strengthening of quantum computing ecosystem development through national and international networking and cooperation

Launch of Fraunhofer activity map: quantum computing funding landscape

The Fraunhofer activity map of the German quantum computing funding landscape, which was developed in the research project Quantum Ecosystem Deutschland Q.E.D. at Fraunhofer IMW, is now available online for all interested: www.quantencomputing-deutschland.de

The interactive map illustrates which organizations in Germany are publicly funded in the field of quantum computing. By clicking on an organization, a comprehensive insight into the projects worked on, the total amount of funding received and the cooperative relationships established is provided.

The online database has been visually enhanced. The funded projects, their objectives and the associated partner network can be accessed quickly and easily. In addition, the network ties created by the funded measures are displayed. This makes an essential part of the quantum computing ecosystem visible, tangible and comprehensible point by point.

 

The data on which the activity map is based comes on the one hand from the comprehensive project funding data of the federal government's funding catalog, and on the other hand from supplies from the individual federal states. Furthermore, projects funded by Horizon Europe are mapped. The European funding landscape is thus presented in an integrated manner.

Fraunhofer team "Quantum Ecosystem Deutschland (Q.E.D.)" invited to lecture program on building the quantum computing ecosystem in Germany

The research project "Quantum Ecosystem Deutschland (Q.E.D.)", funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF, attended the World of QUANTUM 2023 in Munich, the platform for the German-speaking quantum community, from June 27 to 30, 2023.

The socio-economic support and networking project assists the BMBF with scientific analyses, the provision of strategic knowledge and methodological contributions in the medium to long-term development of a technologically sovereign and internationally competitive quantum computing ecosystem in Germany.
